When we announced the arrival of Annabel, there were a few doubters that seemed to think that this meant we wouldn’t be doing any more work on the house. And the silence here on the blog probably confirmed that impression. Au contraire, our friends. Sure, we’ve been hampered by a serious lack of time and a temporary lack of money due to Cherie’s maternity leave. And there seems to be societal disapproval about operating a table saw with a baby sleeping nearby. But we are crafty, determined people and we found a way to make progress even with these obstacles, using what little time and materials we had on hand.
We made drawers.
Lots of drawers.
We made drawers for the silverware.
And drawers for the cooking utensils.
Drawers for the trash (bottom) and the junk (top).
And drawers for the cat (apparently).
They all are made of 1/2” poplar with blind dovetail joinery. If you want to know what that is, you’re going to have to ask Michael. Just kidding. Blind dovetails are when the dovetail in a joint doesn’t show on one face, as clearly shown here:
Like all the kitchen cabinets, these will eventually be painted. All drawers and cabinet drawers will be flushmounted. The hardware that you see is just temporary. So, for that matter, is the drawer front on the silverware drawer. We’re still experimenting a bit to see what works.
This is all part of a newly re-energized kitchen effort. We realize that we’ve only got another few months until we need to have our kitchen childproofed. And we think that childproofing generally requires drawers, cabinet doors, and other fancy items meant to contain knives and poisons and whatnot. (Right? We’re new to this parenting thing, so let us know if we are on the wrong track.) So the improvements are moving ahead, one drawer at a time.
And if you don’t think that a few drawers count as a improvement, then you clearly haven’t lived a year-and-a-half without a silverware drawer.

Nice drawers! And beautiful cat (we’ve got two, a tuxedo and a tabby, both of which would hop in a space like that immediately.)

You two do such beautiful woodwork. Sigh. Loved the kitty. I thought that drawer was made just for that reason! Everyone needs a cat drawer, not to mention any box you bring in the house becomes a cat “drawer”. LOL

We did put a childlock on the drawer with all the cleaning supplies but that was it. Funny though, whenever we forget to relock it, Little Abbey reminds us. We’ve also trained her how to close doors of rooms she isn’t supposed to be in unsupervised like the bathroom where things tend to end up in the toilet. She also knows how to unload the dishwasher, put a new liner bag in the trashcan and other household chores. She is only 21 months old so I figure I have a few more years before she wizens up.

Wow – no more hunting for spoons? Kind of sucks the adventure out of cooking.

So glad to see a new post. That whole kid proofing thing is only good for a year or two tops.

Boy, ya’ll sure have some fancy drawers!..Sounds funny, doesn’t it? Great blog, found it by accident. I am a Florida native and wondered how you ended up where you did. I went throught the archives and it is all great work. Building a home while employed elsewhere can be tough..been there done that!

Hey Cherie,
Shey just brought her baby in (he’s really cute!) and it made me wonder how you guys are doing so I thought I’d “stop in”. Annabel looks like a sweety and I’m glad to see you are all well.
Great job on the drawers! I especially love the cat drawer. And just FYI, we don’t eat at the table either. Yep, it seems like hunching over the coffee table is very fashionable these days!
Okay, gotta get back to work! I absolutely love your blog. It always gives me a chuckle. You’re a great writer!
Take care!
