We have very different styles.  Michael is a strict traditionalist, classic all the way.  Cherie prefers things to be a little quirkier, to feel personal and unique.

When we started discussing the type of house we wanted, we tried to find a middle ground in between these two styles.  We discovered that we both could be happy with a Craftsman house.  The Arts and Crafts style is based upon simplicity, function, traditional craftsmanship, and the influence of nature, all of which seemed to be perfect for a house in the Maine woods.

The house that suited us best was published in a 1905 edition of The Craftsman magazine, a design enticingly titled, “A Cottage Planned with a Special Idea to Economical Heating.”  Did I mention it was cold here?

We are modernizing the floorplan a little bit, but for all intents and purposes, this is our house:

What do you think?

You can plan and plan (and plan) until the ground freezes (ahem) but until you actually get on the ground, it doesn’t mean much.  So this weekend our friends Mark and Lynn helped us mark out the driveway and house.  Lynn took this lovely picture of us standing in our living room, looking out the bay window.  Do you like how we’ve decorated?

Don’t mind the outfits.  It was fourteen degrees that day. (FOURTEEN.)

Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, step right up.  We are about to begin what is sure to be the most stressful, most intense, most rewarding adventure either of us has been through.

We are going to build a house.

We close on the land this week.
